Bill Barbour Memorial Scholarship

Bill Barbour Memorial Scholarship

The Men’s Ministry (“Sons of Thunder”) at Sunrise UMC will make its annual Bill Barbour Memorial Scholarship available to a worthy Sunrise youth for the 2018 – 2019 academic year. Bill Barbour was a beloved Sunrise brother who lost his years long battle with cancer in June, 2014. Bill loved Jesus Christ and was passionate about many things during his lifetime. Bill loved athletics (especially anything N.C. State Wolfpack related) and was a long-time supporter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (“FCA”).

A student interested in this scholarship needs to submit reference letters from her/his FCA Huddle adult leader/advisor as well as a letter from her/his youth Pastor. Reference letters can be submitted beginning March 1, 2018. Qualifications are fairly straightforward – the recipient will be a current or former active Sunrise Youth Group participant who is also active in FCA and who will be enrolled in an accredited two-year or four-year degree program for the 2018-2019 school year. The scholarship selection committee will consist of Tracy Barbour and members of the Men’s Ministry Leadership Team. The Bill Barbour Memorial Scholarship is intended to be an annual award whose financial amount may vary from year-to- year based on annual fundraising success. The award will be $1,500 for the 2018-2019 academic year.

Now for the fundraising: The Sons of Thunder (Mark 3:17) would like to help you prepare for your New Year’s holiday by selling BBQ pork shoulders. The seasoned and cooked shoulders will be sold whole, foil wrapped, ready for you to take home to be the centerpiece of your New Year’s Day dinner or buffet. The shoulders will be seasoned identically to the way we season them each year for our Spring BBQ and will be offered for $40. Pints of Eastern North Carolina style vinegar sauce will also be available for $5. Shoulders will be ready for pick up the afternoon of December 30th . An online sign-up sheet on Sunrise’s web site as well as a paper signup sheet in the Lobby are now available. Direct any questions to James Bingham (jamesbingham62@gmail.com).

This is a great way for us to honor the memory a great man, Bill Barbour, and also to assist a young person who shares Bill’s passions as a disciple of Jesus Christ and active participant in FCA.
