Rev. Tom Newman

I was born in September of 1970 and raised in rural Alamance County and first came to Christ at a Vacation Bible School at my grandmother’s church.  From that time forward I have been “hungry” to go to church!

I graduated from Southern Alamance High School in 1988 with honors and significant scholarship to Elon College where I graduated in 1992 Magna Cum Laude as a Philosophy Major with a minor in Religion.  I entered Duke that fall and graduated in 1995 with an M-Div.  While at Duke I served in various capacities including as a Shelter/Building Manager for Allied Churches of Alamance County where I oversaw the maintenance of a 13,000 square foot ministry facility that housed an adult day care, Christian assistance network, soup kitchen, homeless shelter and much more.  In the spring of 1994 I joined Front Street United Methodist Church and subsequently served field education placements at Lake Waccamaw (summer of 1994) and Swepsonville United Methodist Church (Student associate in the academic term of 94-95).

Upon finishing Duke, I was appointed as a Full Time Licensed Local Pastor to LaGrange United Methodist Church (1995-1999).  I was ordained a Deacon in 1996 and an Elder in 1998 (under the guidelines of the 1992 Discipline).  I have served appointments to Angier UMC (1999-2006) in Angier, NC and Salem UMC (2006-2011) in Greenville, NC.  In 2011 I was appointed to Sunrise UMC in Holly Springs, NC.  I have served on a number of boards and agencies in the NC Annual Conference including the Board of Institutions, Congregational Development, New Faith Communities Lead Team, and multiple district committees on ordained ministry.

I am the father of 2:  Joshua Thomas who was born May 7, 2003 and Elijah “Eli” Thomas who was born October 25, 2005.  I look forward to seeking ways with you to grow as devoted disciples of Jesus Christ who are empowered by The Holy Spirit for the transformation of the world.
