Director of Music Ministries
Reports to: Pastor (primary) and Staff-Parish Committee (secondary)

Overview
The Music Ministries Director will play a vital role in the worship life of Sunrise UMC, leading
our “traditional/liturgical” worship service, handbell choir, and developing children’s music
ministry. This person will work in conjunction with the Praise Band Leader in overseeing and assisting the “contemporary praise” musical service.
This year-round position is projected to average 20-25 hours weekly with a little less in the
summer months (June-Aug) when children are out of school.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
Worship Leadership
● Plan and prepare weekly music for the traditional/liturgical service, including leading
rehearsals with church musicians.
● Lead the congregation and/or direct the choir in singing hymns/songs for the weekly
traditional/liturgical service and non-Sunday holidays including Christmas Eve, Ash
Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. Familiarity with the United Methodist
Hymnal is preferred.
● Direct and/or coordinate volunteers to lead preschool and elementary-aged students in a
children’s music program, conducting practice as needed for musical offerings at least
quarterly throughout the traditional school year.
● Direct special and/or seasonal musical groups such as the handbell choir, the men’s choir,
and holiday cantata ensembles.
Musical Skills and Requirements
Must be able to play the piano and simultaneously sing to lead our weekly worship
music.
● Must have at least 3 years of experience playing piano and singing in a church ministry.
● Ability to read, play and teach others printed music for worship presentations.
Communication & General Administration
● Participate in staff meetings and Administrative Council meetings, and periodic
children/youth ministry team meetings.
● Partner with other staff and lay leaders in coordinating the yearly church calendar and
major events as they relate to music.
● Communicates, supervises and provides work direction to the Church Pianist and
arranges for substitutes as needed.
● Oversees and coordinates the Audio/Visual and Sound Board work schedule and ensures
A/V & SB staffer and volunteers coverage for regular and holiday/special services.
● Provide back-up/fill-in support to Praise Band & Youth Music Leader as needed.
● Provide music information to the congregation through our e-newsletter, website, etc.
● Purchases, inventories, and maintains storage of music, materials, equipment, and
supplies required for the various music groups.
● Budgets and maintain accurate expense records in support of the music ministries.
● Schedules piano tunings and maintenance for the church bells.
● Promptly report planned absences to the Pastor and arrange for substitute music or
musicians as needed during approved leave times.
Management / General Administration
● Selects or assists in selecting related music, materials, and supplies as required, works
with A/V staff and volunteers to ensure lyrics and graphics are correctly projected in
worship services.

● Creative and willing to bring new forms of worship to the church.
● Ability to leverage volunteers and engage “hidden talent” from the congregation to
support the music and arts ministry.
Computer / Technical Skills
● Knowledgeable in use or quickly learn of Google/Microsoft office suite, Planning Center
Online (worship planning software), and ProPresenter (sanctuary A/V software).
● Knowledge and use of Audio/Visual and Sound Systems equipment to assist in the
training, guidance, and support with A/V & SB staffer and volunteers.
