Dr. Shana Barr

Meet Shana, our dynamic Contemporary Worship Leader and accomplished pianist, with roots from the serene valleys of West Virginia. At Sunrise, she fosters an atmosphere of worship that encourages participation, connection, and spiritual growth among congregation members of all ages.

Shana’s musical journey began at Marshall University, where she earned her BA in Music Education, mastering both piano and clarinet. Her dedication led her to George Mason University (GMU), where she immersed herself in the art of instrumental conducting. From directing GMU’s Broadway shows to teaching musical theater and education courses, Shana’s expertise culminated in the achievement of a PhD in Education.

After completing her formal education, Shana felt a calling to serve in children’s
ministry at Springfield UMC in Northern Virginia. There she cultivated a nurturing and engaging environment for children to grow in their faith, develop meaningful
relationships, and deepen their understanding of biblical teachings. In 2014, Shana and her family left the vibrant bustle of the D.C. metro area and relocated to North Carolina, where they found a welcoming church community at Sunrise. Currently, Shana teaches music education in Wake County, continuing to inspire her young students through her passion for music.

When not teaching or leading our contemporary worship service, Shana enjoys relaxing at the beach with her family or outdoors with a good book and a Diet Coke. She’s an avid traveler and skilled crocheter, known for her handmade gifts. Shana is a self-proclaimed donut snob and admirer of everything “Snoopy.” Each year, she eagerly anticipates her annual tradition of watching timeless classics like “Pride and Prejudice” and “The Sound of Music.”

Whether indulging in one of life’s simple pleasures or enthusiastically cheering on the Washington Capitals, Shana can be found leading our congregation in worship Sunday mornings at 9:00 and “making a joyful noise” (Psalm 100) with all who gather.
